Pond concrete collar

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.53 PM

Hi, I'm building a garden pond and will be pouring a concrete collar around the perimeter to get a level. I've managed to get a collar height of 15-20cm, just with the terrain being how it is. The pond will not be raised and the collar will have railway sleepers sitting on it to finish. The ground is clay soil. My first question is do I need a hardcore sub-base? I've not seen anyone else adding one on YouTube. Question number 2, do I need to add rebar or is it over-engineering? Final question, can I pour the cement/ballast mix in the trench dry then add water with hose, or does it need to be pre-mixed with water?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

hi ,if it was me i would hardcore sub base all round only because you will be putting sleepers on top and i dare say at some point they will be sat on or stood on, also you should mix the cement and ballast first then poor it in to your trench, would not worry about rebar area is not big enough, hope this helps. kind regards Paul

Hardcore, rebar isn't necessary. Use a mixer for the concrete then pour.

I personally would use subbase to give a solid foundation for the concrete which would reduce the chances of it cracking in time. Secondly, definitely mix the ballast and cement with water first and then pour in to your trench when all mixed. Rebar isn't needed as the area you are to concrete is only small. Hope this helps!
