Getting an electrician to fit MC4 connectors

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

One of my solar panel wire got chewed up by a fox/cat(not sure which one). They are installed on the ground, hence the issue. I checked with my installer and they said we will need to replace the solar panel. I believe they are choosing the easier option or trying to get some money. I checked the wires and checked online and it seems a MC4 connector should get the panel online. Any opinions are welcome. Should I get a new panel ~£100-150 plus labour and fitting charges ? Or just get an electrician to connect the wires using a MC4 connector ?

It's possible that using an MC4 connector could be a more cost-effective solution than replacing the entire solar panel, especially if the damage is limited to the wire. However, you should weigh the pros and cons: **MC4 Connector:** Pros: - Potentially lower cost compared to replacing the entire panel. - Can restore functionality without needing to replace the panel itself. Cons: - It might not be a permanent solution if the panel has other hidden damages. - If not done properly, it could lead to further issues or decreased efficiency. **Replacing Panel:** Pros: - Guarantees a fully functional and undamaged solar panel. - May have a warranty or guarantees from the manufacturer. Cons: - Higher cost due to panel replacement, labor, and fitting charges. - Could be an unnecessary expense if only the wire is damaged. Consider consulting with a solar panel specialist or electrician to assess the extent of the damage and provide a more accurate recommendation. They can help you make an informed decision based on the specific situation and potential long-term implications.

Hi Pranab. The damaged part of the cable can be cut off and fit with new MC4 Connectors. No need to replace the whole Panel.

Ensure you take caution if attempting to repair the cable yourself as unlike a standard domestic circuit that can be isolated by turning off the breaker, the solar panel with constantly produce a current.

Have you noticed a drop in performance from your panels? The MC4 connection is just that, it shouldn't have to mean the panel is trashed, might be better to get a local electrician to look at it, a few quick tests will prove whether the panel is still serviceable...... But not perhaps the firm you have already asked
