Painting Veneer Kitchen Cabinets

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.53 PM

I'd like to give the kitchen a makeover. The doors are covered in what appears to be a plastic veneer. I know I need to lightly sand & prime but I'm confused about what paint I use next. Internet says oil based but what exactly am I looking for, cam anyone recommend a brand or be more specific. Thank you in advance.

When painting veneer kitchen cabinets, it's important to properly prepare the surface to ensure good adhesion and a long-lasting finish. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to paint your veneer kitchen cabinets: Clean the cabinets: Remove any dirt, grease, or grime from the cabinets using a mild detergent and water. Wipe them dry with a clean cloth. Lightly sand the veneer: Use a fine-grit sandpaper (around 120-150 grit) to lightly sand the surface of the veneer. This will help roughen it up slightly and create a better surface for the primer to adhere to. Be gentle and avoid sanding too aggressively to prevent damage to the veneer. Prime the cabinets: Apply a good-quality primer specifically designed for use on glossy or smooth surfaces. Look for a bonding primer that promotes adhesion. This will help the paint adhere better and provide a durable finish. Apply the primer evenly with a brush or roller, following the manufacturer's instructions. Allow it to dry completely. Choose the right paint: While oil-based paint was commonly recommended for painting veneer in the past, there are now water-based options available that offer excellent adhesion and durability. Look for a high-quality, water-based acrylic enamel paint that is specifically formulated for use on kitchen cabinets. These paints provide a hard and durable finish, and they are easier to work with, clean up, and have less odor compared to oil-based paints. Apply the paint: Use a high-quality brush or a foam roller to apply the paint to the cabinets. Start with thin and even coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next one. This will help you achieve a smooth and professional finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding drying times and the number of coats needed for optimal coverage. Optional: Apply a topcoat: To further enhance the durability and longevity of your painted cabinets, you may consider applying a clear topcoat. Look for a water-based polyurethane or a clear coat specifically designed for use on painted surfaces. Apply it according to the manufacturer's instructions, allowing sufficient drying time between coats. As for specific brands, there are many reputable paint manufacturers that offer suitable products for painting veneer cabinets. Some popular brands include Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, Behr, and PPG. Visit your local paint store and ask for recommendations based on your specific needs and preferences. Remember to always follow the instructions provided by the paint and primer manufacturers for the best results. Additionally, take proper safety precautions, such as wearing gloves and ensuring proper ventilation, when working with paint and primer.

There is some room for confusion here, laminate is a plastic coating over cabinets made to look like wood. Where as veneer is a protective layer over real wooden cabinets. Easily confused, and I have made the mistake myself. If they are wooden and protected by a veneer then they always need to be degreased, maybe even twice if they are especially greasy. Once degreased wipe down with a damp cloth, allow to dry, then sand down with 220-180 grit sandpaper. Once sanded properly dust off and then wipe down if needed. Getting this stage right is incredibly important, always make sure the units and your working area are dust free, otherwise the units will look terrible when finished. If making a plastic tent to work in is a bit over the top, then please just keep other people and trades out of your working area. Once dust free apply the primer, Dulux super grip primer is a great base coat. Whilst paint make sure the edges do not get runs on them, in fact in is often easier to take the cupboard doors and handle off and paint on a flat surface. One dried, lightly rub with 220 sanding pads. once happy with the finish, either apply another primer if it is a big colour change. If not start applying the top coats. Many years ago paints would need a primer, undercoat and topcoat. However now many paints have a self undercoating base. Therefore, a primer and two topcoats (depending on the paint, see tins for details) can often do the trick. If you have used an emulsion for walls and ceilings for the cabinets then I would suggest using a wax top coat or a clear varnish to protect the units. As although these paints are hardwearing they are not designed for cabinets. I'm thinking "little green" or "farrow and ball". If however you are using Rawlins cabinet paint or something similar then this won't be an issue. Although there are several paints you can use, I have only mention a few as this is just a very, very brief breakdown. Make sure your working area is always well ventilated, always wear a mask and gloves when sanding and painting. And follow the instructions on the manufacturers website or product.
