Central Heating

Will a combi boiler work for me

Anonymous user 16 March 2024 - 2.51 PM

I am getting my central heating system full replaced (boiler, radiators, pipework) and thinking about getting a combi boiler again. We live in a detached house which has 6 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, small office, kitchen and 2 bathrooms (5 adults and 2 children). In total we have 19 radiators and 2 showers. We have had the old combi boiler (Vailiant) for 14 years and never had a problem. We have also never had the need to run 2 showers at once (in the future 2 showers might be used together, it will be very very rare though). Should I stick with a combi, and if so what size of boiler do you recommend? Will modern combis be able to power 19 radiators? Any reason to change to a system boiler?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Paul, the correct sized Combi Boiler would heat all your radiators no problem. Depending on your water pressure and the flow rate of your showers most combi boilers will struggle with 2 showers running at the same time. You would need a boiler with a 15 litre/min hot water flow rate, 35-40kw minimum. In your situation, here at "Future-proof Building Services Ltd", we would recommend fitting a Regular/System Gas boiler (18kw plus) installed with a twin coil Unvented Hot Water cylinder. This will cost you a bit more than the combi option and a new location for the hot water cylinder would be needed. However in the long run it will be a great investment made.... (Let me explain). Whatever "Gas" Boiler option you choose to install will probably be the last "Gas" boiler you ever have to purchase. If it lives as long as your trusty old Vailiant it will most certainly be replaced with an Energy Efficient "Heat Pump". (Gas boilers will be a thing of the past in 10yrs). This is where your investment comes into play. A Heat Pump requires a suitable twin coil Hot Water Cylinder to operate. The Cylinder you install now will be good for at least 25yrs, well into your future heat pumps life. Spend that bit extra now and "Future-proof" your home. Regards, Tim,

A combi boiler can be a good choice for your home based on the information you provided, especially if your current system has been working well. However, there are a few factors to consider: Hot water demand: Combi boilers are great for homes where the hot water demand isn't particularly high. They heat water directly from the mains when you turn on a tap, so you don't need to wait for water to heat up. However, they might struggle to supply multiple outlets at the same time. Although you mentioned you rarely use two showers simultaneously, as the number of residents in the house grows or changes, this might become an issue. Number of Radiators: Combi boilers are usually best suited to smaller homes with fewer radiators. That being said, a large combi boiler should be able to handle 19 radiators, but it's important to get a boiler with a high enough kilowatt (kW) output to cope with your heating demands. You may need a boiler specialist to calculate the exact size you need, but typically a 35-42kW combi boiler should be able to heat up to 20 radiators. Space: Combi boilers don't need a separate hot water tank or cold water storage tank, so they can save space in your home. This can be a significant advantage if your loft or cupboard space is limited. Efficiency: Combi boilers are very efficient when it comes to heating water, as they only heat the water you're actually going to use. Modern combi boilers can reach efficiencies of 90% or higher. Ease of installation: Since combi boilers have fewer parts, they can be easier and quicker to install than system or regular boilers. In the end, whether a combi boiler is the best choice for you will depend on the specifics of your home and your family's hot water and heating needs. Before making a decision, it might be a good idea to talk to a heating professional who can assess your home and help you choose the right boiler for your needs. However, considering you've been using a combi boiler for years without any issues, and the fact that your hot water demand isn't incredibly high, it might make sense to stick with what you know and have had success with.

A modern combi would work fine would need a boiler in range of 32kw to 40kw. Would just need to work out the btu ratings from the radiators and size the boiler accordingly

With house size as minimum combi boiler 36KW would cover 15 to 20 radiator,s easy or 42KW much better. But I would highly recommend you to go for system boiler .

You can still use a combi but I would fit a 40 kw one and it must do 16 liters a minute ( like a ideal vogue +! Or like that. Regards Scott.
