pour paint waste liquids down sink or toilet drain?

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.46 PM

Hi everyone, I'm redecorating a room in my house and wonder if I should be washing my brushes and tools in my sink and pour paint water down the sink or the toilet drain and flush. It doesn't feel right but can anyone tell me what's the correct way of responsibly disposing of painting waste including liquids? Thank you very much.

Its a massive issue, as far as I am concerned. In my experience some people will flush away and let the chemicals enter our water system, which will ultimately enter the food chain. I let my waste paint go hard and dispose. Not super great but I think its better. Solvent paints are a different matter as they will take a long time to harden. I think the council class them as a hazard. But I hardly every use anything solvent based and they are, for the most part, all phased out I think.

Hi, if the paint is only emulsion it is fine. But got of your washing brushes in spirits pour the liquid back into the bottle and dispose of properly. A trick for emulsion painting - if you are going to reuse the equipment, put the brushes in a bag make sure all air is out, twist and tie up. Hope this helps.

Good morning Paints and thinners should be disposed of correctly at your local waste facilities, Emulsions can be washed with warm soapy water at home and drained as normal. Hope this helps you and your question.
