Insulation
Loft conversion insulation

I have a lift conversion completed ~20 years ago. It’s in need of decoration but I’m wondering if it’s worth upgrading the insulation first?
I can see the pitched roof is insulated between the rafters with 50mm polystyrene sheets. Basic plasterboard is then attached over the rafters. Is it worth stripping off the plasterboard replacing the polystyrene with modern 50mm Kingspan and then fitting over with an insulated plasterboard panel which seems to be the suggested approach now.
It’s a 4m x 8m dimensioned space.

We would recommend using a open cell spray foam which comes with a 25 year guarantee.
With using this method you could leave the existing plasterboard in situ and remove the existing insulation boards from cutting in access hatches in the plasterboard. Then insulate into clear cavity behind plasterboard using the liquid open cell spray foam and re-board access hatches with existing plasterboard if not damaged then plaster skim finish.
I would recommend avoiding any form of spray insulation as this becomes permanently stuck to the underside of your roof and is very difficult to remove once installed.
I don't believe there is any true benefit to removing the original insulation if it's been fitted properly.
Definitely not spray foam of any kind.
Remove the plasterboard
Either leave or replace the insulation with 50mm PIR boards (optional)
Add 25mm of PIR insulation over the rafters (where plasterboard was)
Add plasterboard on top and skim
