Raised decking supported by scaffolding
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.34 PM
Hello, I'm thinking of buying a house with decking. Its on quite a drop, and the decking is supported by scaffolding. I'm guessing this isn't safe. What work would be required to make this safe? Thank you Jane

Good afternoon Jane!
Ultimately if the scaffolding is erected correctly and the decking/scaffold boards are tied in (secured to the scaffolding) then it should be fine. Obviously decking is usually laid on a sub-frame as using a base structure like scaffolding would simply be more expensive. Needless to say if the timber is old and rotted then you will have to replace it. I hope this helps.

The scaffolding while supporting the decking is not very attractive and not suitable. A wooden support system with posts concreted into the ground would be what I would recommend. Paint the bottom of the posts with bitumen to give added protection.

Scaffolding is only anywhere a temporary measure. Not knowing the full picture I would secure decking from the ground up with substantial structure posts that are post mixed to hole in ground. Then batten between upright posts to conceal
