Windows & Door fitting
Do all suppliers get their glass from the same source?
Anonymous user 1 March 2024 - 3.01 PM
I have had 3 quotes for some replacement double glazed windows. Two quotes were almost the same and one £285 extra. One glazier who saw only photo's of my widows and quoted a lower price told me that there's no difference between glass as all suppliers get their glass from the same source. As they all live in the same area would this be likely to be true?
The glazier who quoted the most measured our windows properly and said that he only fitted Pilkington glass - toughened to All windows.
I don't know if the two lower quotes are offering me a cheaper glass for my windows or not. I'm also am wondering if the Pilkington glass will be correct for my patio door as it doesn't carry a kite mark.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
It’s likely the lower quotes have not quoted toughened glass in every unit as only critical glazing needs to be toughened . Critical glazing is in doors or any part of a window that falls below 800mm off the floor . Bathrooms and on suites should be toughened as they can be classed as a slip trip or fall area.
Not all glass is the same as there are a few different brands but most have a very similar u value for energy efficiency . If you are changing all your glass go for a rated spec which is low e glass with argon gas and super spacer bar
When quoting from pictures the size can look a lot different to the actual size and you also don't know if the glass needs to be toughened or the actual spec of the glass so that can put the price up. With glazing you will always get a range of prices it just depends how people price their jobs. Some people will give you a discount if doing multiple panes of glass and others will just charge you by the square meter. But glass for a patio door will always be toughened I would be surprised if anyone didn't put it in
