Laying Turf over concrete base

Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 3.33 PM

We've just removed a shed from the 50s from our back garden. It was quite the beast, the walls built on brick foundations three courses tall, on top of a concrete base. Effectively, it's left behind a 5m x 2.5m hole in the back garden, 38cm deep. The top of the top layer of bricks is flush with the surrounding earth. We want to turf over this area, and the surrounding area which is a combination of earth, old flower beds and lawn. Question is: will this work? Is this a deep enough base to ensure there is drainage and the grass grows well? It looks like the concrete base is around 30cm deep, so removing or drilling drainage holes would be difficult. I'm thinking we could remove the first couple of layers of bricks, then get someone to lay some type of gravel drainage layer, then top soil, then turf. Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Aslong as there is 10cm of soil it would be fine the bricks would act as better drainage then more soil

110mm substrate should suffice.

It will work just fine as the grass roots go side ways and eventually form a net like structure, decent amount of water and sunshine and good drainage should do the trick.
