Kitchen Fitting

Reduce Sink Hole In Worktop

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.45 PM

I am planning to replace the Kitchen sink with a smaller one and it will leave a large hole / Gap and i was wondering the best way to patch it? I am planning to cover all worktops with a new film to give it a new look and would rather not replace unless i have to.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If that were to happen to me I’d first wallow in self-pity for a few minutes while I listened to my father’s voice in my head repeating over and over, “Measure twice, cut once. Measure twice, cut once”. Then I’d mull over the options. Perhaps I could return the sink to where I bought it and get one that fits? Turn the mistake into an opportunity to replace the whole countertop, and while I’m at it just re-do the whole damn kitchen? Finally, I’d get all McGyver and see if I could cut out a quarter inch spacer and glue it onto a larger board that I’ve routed a channel on for it that I could then glue and screw to the underside of the counter and then mount the sink. I’d have to think that through a little more but that would probably work.

You can try to "increase" the area of the countertop by screwing several layers of plywood with glue, sanding the surface after that and, as mentioned above, pasting the entire countertop with a new coating ...

I think with the work involved in getting it to a level good enough to cover I’m pretty sure it would be less hassle to replace the top with a new/ used one if your going to cover it anyway

Like a lot of people are saying you're probably best to replace the worktop, better to do it right now then it look hideous when it's covered and you regret trying to save money. If you join timber to the cut out no matter how good it's done I can imagine when it's wrapped or covered you will always see the joints.
