Extractor fan in ceiling

Anonymous user 1 March 2024 - 3.01 PM

We have a bathroom (with no windows) which has an extractor fan fitted onto the ceiling. There is water dripping from the extractor fan. i do not know what type of handyman to call out? Is this an issue with my loft and condensation or an issue with the extractor fan please? In the loft there are big silver air pipes that i can only assume link to the extractor fans and then to the roof.

Hi, I'd advise an electrician could look at this, from my experience with similar issues in the past, this is either due to the run of ducting to the external vent being too long, or running downhill back towards the fan, allowing the moisture to drip back through, or the fan fitted is not powerful enough to push the moisture out through the ducting. if you have a ceiling mounted fan currently, having a vent fitted to the ceiling with a more powerful in-line fan fitted in the loft may be a good solution. Hope that helps! Canning Electrical Services

You’ve probably- more than likely answered your own question. It most certainly could be a condensation issue, which primarily would result in a small leak coming from your extraction. however it’s really something that will initially have to be investigated by an electrician, as they’re the ones who typically install these.

When we install extractor fans into bathroom ceilings below lofts we connect them to the roof vents with insulated aluminium ducting. This helps to reduce the amount of condensation that forms within the ducting when the warm moist bathroom air meets the cold air in the loft. The ducting should be securely connected onto both the fan and the roof vent. The instructions for your fan should tell you the maximum length of ducting that can be used. We favour in-line fans where it is practical to use them.
