Old circuit box with wylex rewireable 5A plugin breaker

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.52 PM

Hi, When I was replacing the ceiling light today, I accidentally blew one of the circuit breakers which apparently is a very old wylex rewireable 5A plugin circuit breaker. I searched online but it doesn't seem commonly available anymore. Where can I find a replacement for this? Also, how difficult/feasible it would be to change the whole box as its very old and these breakers seem to be becoming more difficult to find anyway? Thanks in advance

Ask an electrician to come to your house to provide the best solution to your problem.

Its harder to find any stock of fuse wire because its quite outdated, you should be able to find some on the internet (ebay, amazon) and I think sometimes wickes has stock in. It would be worth getting a quote off an electrician to replace the consumer unit though, there are some important safety devices installed in them which are definitely needed if you are doing your own electrical work. Doesn't take more than a day to replace usually, all the power has to go off for most of the time its installed with some testing to ensure its working as it should.

You can get replacement breakers for these boards. This would not give you any RCD protection though. Far better to have a new board fitted, this work would include testing the property to allow certificates to be issued. Many of the newer boards have built in surge protective devices do an extra level of protection for the property.

Ask a qualified electrician to come provide you a quotation to upgrade your consumer unit to meet 18th edition regulations.
