New destination for rainwater
Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.52 PM
The front of my house is a 3 metre patio which slopes down from the pavement to the house with a 1-2 foot drop. Consequently, rainwater flows down that patio to the house, which has the necessary damp-proof course and a small soaking edging along the front of it.
Here's my question: the guttering along the front edge of the roof ends up in downpipes which are open to that soaking edge (i.e. not buried into a soakaway). This means that when it rains, the water is directed to the front of the house. Is there a better way of dealing with this water that doesn't end up with it soaking into the ground right by the house?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
either a soak away which has to be 6 mtrs from the property or a water butt I think some water companies were giving you a reduction on the water rates if you installed water butts.
good luck Alex
Water companies will give you a discount for fitting a water butt provided you don’t pave over your garden preventing surface water from naturally soaking away. To solve this particular issue the customer should look at building a wall to redirect water from the road away from the patio.
A soaking edge around a property dose not do good in the long run as this can cause subsidence dependind on the foundations.
Consider the aqua channel drains around the property this takes the water away from the property and can be diverted elsewhere with not to severe consequences.
