Blockwork removal

Anonymous user 16 March 2024 - 2.50 PM

I have the dreaded box room bulk head 😭 one wall is block and that's the side that is most accessible without losing space. Ideally I would love to remove it altogether but understand that this may be a supporting wall for the roof. Could I open it up by using a lintle? UPDATE :- Turns out it's tied in at the gable near floor level where the slope of the staircase ceiling starts. Does this make a difference to previous advice as we don't want to make the walls unstable ty.

It's crucial to have a structural engineer or qualified professional inspect the bulkhead and surrounding structure to determine if it's safe to remove or modify the bulkhead. They can also advise you on the most appropriate solution, such as a lintel or another support method, to ensure your home's structural integrity is maintained. However, I can provide some general guidance. A bulkhead in a room is often used to cover structural elements like beams, joists, or ductwork. If the bulkhead is concealing a structural element like a load-bearing beam or wall, removing it without proper support may compromise the integrity of your home. You mentioned the possibility of using a lintel. A lintel is a horizontal support used to bear the weight of the structure above an opening, such as a window or door. If the bulkhead is part of a load-bearing wall, a lintel might be a viable solution to support the load while creating an opening. However, whether this is feasible depends on the specifics of your situation, such as the load the lintel would need to carry and the space available for installation.

IT can be checked easily if you have some knowledge, check if it is anything built on top,or something resting on or reveal that box to inspect it,then an I beam or C channel can be inserted

I would have a building inspector come out and take a look as if it needs support your would require the regs anyway.
