Greenhouse base 6 x 8

Anonymous user 1 March 2024 - 3.01 PM

I have just had a greenhouse base laid by young man who has worked for me before initially he quoted £500 Labour but after I queried this he popped round and said he could do the job in a day and that he had put his day rate up to £200 per day, he said he was sure he could get this done in a day. He ordered the items from a builders merchants and I had to phone up pay and arrange delivery which I did but via text I queried the damp proof membrane not being on the order he told me not to worry he had some and he was trying to save me some money. We did not agree a cash deal but I did withdraw £200 cash as I thought it would help him out. My wife told me that when he popped round he told her he had some damp proof left over which he would use to save us money. At the finish of the job he asked for £250 when I queried this he said it was £50 for the damp proof membrane, I said this seemed expensive particularly as it was not freshly pulled off a new roll. As I had only £200 cash I said that I would have to write a cheque to which he said it would have to be £300 +. We did end up finding the extra by taking the cash from my wife’s fund for a Portsmouth visit. During his days work I did help move some heavy turf, we did keep a steady supply of teas, we made bacon rolls and even put up a large canopy to keep him dry when it rained. He did a superb job by the way. Was he reasonable or taking advantage of our easy going manner?

Definitely taking advantage

It's hard to say, but I don't think he's "definitely" taking advantage. He may have thought he had some dpm, but actually had to buy some, and didn't want to say out of embarrassment. As for the labour, if he had to excavate the area, spread and compacted hardcore, and then poured concrete, that seems like a lot of work for one person to do in a day, but if he simply poured conrete on soil, then maybe the quality of work might be poor. For a days work, I think that £250 is ok, probably could be cheaper, but not much. A semi-skilled labourer employed by a company get paid £100 a day at least (with pension but gets tax, obviously he wanted cash to avoid tax), so I think that for someone self-employed, that is a good price, the question is if he has done the job correctly or not. If he has not done it properly, it is a very bad price.

Trades should not take advantage of clients, instead they should help them achieve what they’re looking to achieve with a fair amounts of money.A fixed quote should be submitted for approval prior to any work commence.
