Extractor fan in a cottage

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.51 PM

My cottage wall near the window is full of condensation, there's no air slides on the window. I would like to have an extractor fan, however the stone wall is about 16" thick it would have to be core drilled. Please could you advise if there is anything else that could be put in to eliminate the damp? It's a listed cottage.

You could firstly install a window mounted extractor fan, directly in your window. If you still require an extractor fan into the wall, then it can be drilled through the stone wall using a110mm diameter Sds + Tungsten Carbide tipped core drill

It would have been better information if you mentioned which room it was but you could fit an expelair in the window or a ceiling extractor fan but I would also check the external pointing if it's starting to come out it could be causing cold spots where the cold air is seeping through and coming into contact with the internal wall and condensating Hope this helps Regards George Boyd

Dehumidifier? Possible treatment as this’ll take the moisture out of the air, or get in contact with a surveyor, they will be able to come and have a look into your home to see what’s causing the problem, and possibly install certain measures to help :)

Hi Lynda, the first and most effective way of reducing condensation is what you have suggested would be too core drill through the wall, the second way would depend on whether the room your having condensation problems is on the first or second floor as if it is on the second floor you could potentially run the extractor pipe out of the tiled roof using a tile vent or something similar.
