Painting caulk on skirting boards

Anonymous user 16 March 2024 - 2.49 PM

Hello just wondering how the pro's do it. Do you paint the caulk the same colour as the skirting or the same colour as the wall if you have some large gaps to fill on uneven walls. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Any paint will be fine once caulk cured. Use quality acrylic caulk. For emulsion paint may need two coats for even coverage, but I would undercoat and gloss personally- properly dried caulk crucial though. Good luck

Yes to both of your answers. You would first caulk the gaps then go around the bottom of the walls with the wall colour (it might need two coats as caulk is a lot greasier now). Then you would paint the woodwork afterwards when the walls are dry (give the caulk a good amount of drying time before you paint it. I like to leave it over night).

Hi I personally fill in the skirting board and paint the walls first then the skirting board, it’s personal choice which ever makes you feel comfortable.

Inevitably when caulking you would endup with caulk on both wall and skirting. So straight answer would be both. However usually what we do is once caulk is dry which on large gaps may take forever hit it with wall paint first (which if colour try to cut to the skirting). Then when you’re painting the skirting you simply cut to the wall. As ‘large gaps’ were mentioned, one more advice would be check the caulk to what thickness you should use it. Personally even if some say silly things like 23mm I wouldn’t trust it on anything bigger than 10-12mm.

I believe these people answering questions incorrectly on a tradespersons site that are not tradespeople should leave these questions to the professionals. If you left caulk to dry over night a decorator would get no jobs finished, total rubbish.most caulk is ready to paint over after 1 hour and is not greasy, two coats is always needed, paint the wall to the skirting, make sure you then sand the skirting before painting,BUT the correct way to do this is with filler, this will create a perfect right angle. For us we would fill the gaps in the skirting board then paint the walls. Once dried, then we would paint the skirting board. All down to personal preference but a satin wood paint for the skirting gives a lovely finish amd doesn't come with the nuances the a heavy gloss paint carries.
