Plastering & Rendering

Plasterboard over rendered internal wall?

Anonymous user 1 March 2024 - 3.00 PM

Can I fix 12.5mm plasterboard over rendered internal walls? Some of the render is shot and has been removed, however the majority is still in place. Would it be possible to board straight into it with screws? Or will this create problems?

The answer is to stick plasterboard or drywall over the wall to cover up the render, all gaps and cracks.

It is possible to fix plasterboard over a rendered internal wall, but there are a few things to consider before doing so. Firstly, you'll need to ensure that the remaining render is stable and securely attached to the wall. If any loose or crumbling render is left in place, it could cause problems later on. You may need to remove any unstable render and repair the underlying wall surface before proceeding. Assuming the remaining render is stable, you can then fix the plasterboard to the wall using screws. However, it's important to use the correct type and length of screw, as well as the correct spacing and pattern, to ensure that the plasterboard is securely attached to the wall. In addition, you'll need to consider how the plasterboard will be finished at the edges and corners. If the wall has a lot of irregularities or variations, it may be difficult to achieve a smooth and even finish at the edges and corners. You may need to use additional materials, such as corner beads or tape, to achieve a professional-looking finish. Overall, fixing plasterboard over a rendered internal wall is possible, but it can be a challenging job that requires careful preparation and attention to detail. If you're not confident in your abilities, it may be best to hire a professional to do the job for you. They will have the necessary experience and tools to ensure that the job is done properly, with a smooth and even finish.

Hi, You wouldn't normally fix plasterboard directly onto a rendered wall with screws, try plasterboard adhesive which will help you plumb the plasterboard and will stick the plasterboard to the wall also there is a expanding foam version which does the same thing but may be a better option for a external wall to reduce moisture transfer. As a precaution you may want to apply a waterproof bonding agent to the rendered wall first.

Use plasterboard adhesive to fix new plasterboard to existing render. Do not screw it

The only thing I'd add. Is to take off all the loose render open up all cracks. Fill the cracks and put at least a scratch coat on the areas where the bigger pieces of render came away. Put waterproofer in the mix especially if it's a solid wall. I'd check the external if it's the inside of an outside wall.
