Removing chimney breast 3 stories
Anonymous user 1 March 2024 - 3.00 PM
Hi everyone, thanks for reading.
We are looking to buy a Victorian property which is 3 floors, and hoping to knock through a wall / chimney breast downstairs. I understand we will need a structural engineer to calculate and RSJ etc, but just in general wondered if anyone could advise how the property being 3 storeys rather than 2 could affect the ease of the work/ cost. It’s in a conservation area so the exterior chimney can’t be altered without permission, so that would have to be considered if we had to remove the whole thing rather than just support. Interested to know as we may not buy the house if it’s not doable. Thanks
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
It’s impossible without photos and drawings to give you the correct advice.
If by the previous comment of supporting it in the loft ( I’m presuming he means gallows brackets.)
Then depending the area of the country you live.
This wouldn’t go through building control in my area and most structural engineers wouldn’t recommend using them.
Hope this helps.

The best and correct way to take this job/work on is to employ a structural engineer to look at the work so as it is compliant with all requirements
