Adding velux windows Loft Conversion

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.51 PM

Hi, We were considering doing loft conversion to our mid terrace house and it happened to be below 1.9m head height. Our first floor ceiling height is only 2.3m so not even sure that’s even possible to lower ceiling to get min head height for dormer conversion. If that will be a pain we are wondering if we could just add velux windows on existing roof slope and convert the loft for storage instead of habitable room since head height isn’t achievable for building regulation. Is it possible to do that?

yes that would be possible, but you would need to upgrade the floor joists to be able to support any extra weight.

As this is an existing loft area then I cannot see why you need to up grade any joists, but it’s always best to have a builder give you a second opinion but if this is just going to be used as storage then why are you thinking about putting roof windows in. Just add more light. Good luck on what you decide to do.

If you have a fully insulated loft, the chances are that the insulation will be much higher than your existing ceiling rafters. If you board straight over these rafters you will compress the insulation and greatly reduce its effectiveness. It may therefore be necessary to install riser stilts onto the existing rafters and board over them. Velux windows are a costly way of lighting a storage area, you may be better to install a couple of led strip lights which are cheap to run and very bright and effective. I’ve just done this exact thing for a customer.

It may be possible to do a mansard conversion to the roof, which would give you greater head height
