Bricklaying & Repointing

Loose brickwork after window board removal

Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 3.32 PM

Hi all, Just had The old window boards removed internally and they had previously large wooden packers to fix into (60s) It is a single skin wall with a cavity with frog bricks. The brick work is all round solid, however in 2 rooms some bricks have a slight “wobble” or slight play in them if I try to move them. It is like the mortar isn’t stuck but what’s holding it is the frog of the brick. At first I removed the ones which had the little bit of play and Feel like no matter if I remove these bricks, some bricks in the next course will then have the same play/movement and it will become never ending if I am not careful. Is this common practice? Should new bricks just go straight over the top? Would appreciate some advise! Thankyou

This will be a recurring cycle like you said if you keep taking brick by brick out and eventually have it all down. You should be able to just mix up some sand and cement and re lay the lose/wobbly bricks back in their places. Before relaying them brake away any old mortar and clean the surface, some people also like to wet down the area the new mix is going on if the surface sucks the moisture in too quickly.

My 30-year experience in exposed and load-bearing masonry The advice of my bricklayer colleague is incorrect as he himself says that the bricks come out one by one if they are pulled out because by now the frog bricks are detached from the mortar. The best solution, even if expensive, is to remove the portions of the walls where the bricks come off and do them again. re-pointing would only be a hope of money and would put the safety of the people who live in the house at risk. Of course it's my opinion

hi,firstly we need to know which bricks on top ,those they form the lintel or side walls or bottom, because in some old houses the mortar is so soft you can manually demolish the whole house due to many reason, with the evidences given it's easy to do extra work or wrong consolidation
