Bathroom ceiling crack

Anonymous user 1 March 2024 - 3.00 PM

Hi, there's a crack in my bathroom ceiling...I first noticed it around 3/4 years ago. It goes from my bathroom pull light to the ceiling light and is gradually extending past there. It also goes down to the bathroom door (both sides) and extends the short distance on the landing to my loft hatch. A builder looked at it a couple of years ago, ( just from below) and reassured me it wasn't subsidence or anything serious. He recommended a painter come in, make the crack larger, and fill it in, and paint over it. This was done, but gradually the crack showed through again. And is creeping it's way towards the end of my bathroom (adjoining wall in my semi-detached house!). Anyone have any ideas please what may be causing this, and what trade best to have come in to look at it and hopefully repair it. TIA

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

As you have already had a painter deal with the issue correctly and it has reappeared I would suggest 2 things 1 - Go into your loft and check that there is nothing putting pressure on the roof beams Ie - Something weighty 2 - You may need to arrange a structural engineer to come and have a look at it especially as it is coming down the wall Hope this helps

Hello, if there are no infiltration problems, I would say that it is a joint between 2 previously installed plasterboard panels. I recommend to repair the crack using a special gauze that will avoid new cracks in the future.

Get a structural engineer if nothing weighty as per previous answer. Not worth the risk if coming down wall now.
