Expired chimney vent question
Anonymous user 16 March 2024 - 2.49 PM
Hello all,
Please pardon my complete lack of knowledge of terminology here.
I have a disused chimney that runs from the roof into the loft where it splits it to a y stack, one side going down into bedroom 1 and the dining below it, the one stack going down into bedroom 2 and the living room below it.
All four vents are capped with slide grill vents.
I wondered is it possible to fill the two bedroom holes in part of in full. They are currently a circle about 100mm. Then leave the lower floor as is so there will still be an exit and entry point at both ends
There is a lot of cold air even with the grill shut so wanted to try to reduce this.
If you have other suggestions. Please feel free to comment
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Personally from my experience you should never Cap a chimney to close off , they should be correctly capped off ie C cap or equivalent as all chimneys should breath other wise you will end up with damp issues from condensation hot air from the house cold air in chimney if there ventilation this should never happen .

Are the vents where the fire places used to be ? If yes you should be fine blocking the vents . The chimney stack should probably be capped as well, this can only be done by actually getting up on the roof and cementing a plate in . I would get the brick and mortar checked while up there , if you decide to reinstate the fire places in the future you definitely need to have flu linings installed

Yes the top bedroom chimneys are really short runs they vent themselves . But ideally you have vents that can be closed. In the summer nice to be able to open for ventilation in the room. Can help to keep house cool.

I would not recommend blocking them up and each one will be a separate flue and if you block the air vents up you could cause damp to form
If you want to block them you will need to cap the top with a breathable cap so water can’t get in but the flue can still breath to prevent damp and water gathering
Hope this helps
