Insulate below floors prior to partial re-wire

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.44 PM

We are undergoing a renovation next year, a rear extension plus renovation of the existing (dated) property. As part of this we will be doing some of the more noddy jobs (stripping wallpaer and insuating under floor boards). EDIT: thanks for the answers thus far. I should clarify that the room will not be ‘re-wired’ as such. We will just add some sockets to the existing ring circuit. Not sure if that makes a material difference to the process. My question is this. If I get the floor boards up and insulate (suspended mineral wool or similar) will it materailly impede an electricain when it comes to moving a few plug sockets and adding a few new one to the rings. I know ideally they would want as clear a space as possible (who wouldn't) but I'm interested to know you annoying its going to be have it in palce prior to electircs going in as obvisouly I can get through some of this stuff at my own pace. Cheers

I think you've answered your own question. Obviously anything that impedes the speed of the job is a pain, but if you can lay the insulation so access to the electrical parts, ie lights cables is not impeded that will help. Lay the insulation under the cables and try to keep joins at the lights and junction boxes, the electrician will thank you.

Adding sockets to walls is not the issue. The hardest and most laborious part of a rewire is dragging cables through the floor void. If your going to put insulation in there (not a good idea imho) you will annoy the electrician. In all my 19 plus years of wiring houses I've never encountered insulated floors. Lofts, yes, flat roofs, yes, never floors. My advice, don't bother. If you really want to, then do it after the rewire, not before. Edit: Adding sockets may still require some alterations to wiring in the floor void. If sockets are on opposite walls, for example.
