Insulation

How do I improve insulation in my attic?

Anonymous user 1 March 2024 - 3.00 PM

Hello, I have just checked the insulation in my attic. I have a thin layer of yellow fluffy insulation which was put in over 20 years ago. On top of that the last owner has covered the whole area with tongue and groove boarding. The house is always cold , is it possible to add more yellow rolls of insulation on top of the tongue and groove.?. Many thanks

You will need to remove any old boards. Get get 50mil insulation and and put boards back up this will resolve the issue of keeping house warm and insulated

Hello, is there any void between existing insulation and boards? If is, I would rather take off boards, top up insulation and reinstall flooring. If no void, still would take off floor boards, top up insulation and reinstall using plastic feet to rise up floor, hope this help, all the best

Hi It’s usually best to lay under the boards, but you can lay over if lifting etc proves difficult! Best also be sure to lay enough around edges (without blocking eave-ventilation. Current standards = 270mm (11”) so top up as required. Best Tony

Currently the recommended level of insulation in the loft is 270mm. If you currently have 100mm already in place then get 170mm thick loft insulation and if you do not require the boarding in the loft, then remove this and roll additional insulation in the opposite direction to the ceiling joists over the top of your current insulation. If you need your loft boarded then it is possible to raise the boards above the upgraded insulation depth in various ways. A professional can do this type of thing for you if you are not confident to do it yourself.
