Damp Proofing

Damp-proofing of Garage Conversion?

Anonymous user 1 March 2024 - 2.59 PM

Hi, our garage had a solid concrete slab and our builder has laid Celotex and a tongue and groove chipboard floor. I asked him about a Damp Proof Course and was told “The celotex is acting as a damp membrane and the chipboard is not fixed to anything, it is a floating floor with glued joint. Depending on what flooring you’re having an additional membrane could go directly under the new floor.” Is this actually true? Surely you need the DPM under the wooden chipboard?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Actually , there will be interstitial condensation under the chipboard, the insulation is not a DPM and there will eventually be actual water on the slab; the surrounding walls will become damp and you’ll have to start over.

Order from bottom upwards should be: DPM, rigid insulation, solid base for floor (conrete, sreed), chip board, posibly top floor layer if any .. Also, pay attention to area where boards touch walls. They should be touching something similar to DPM, DPC or foam solution ..

You should start with a membrane but as the slab is all ready down you need to lay a plastic DPM or paint an epoxy floor resin which will work as a DPM and then lay the floor back down
