Bathroom Fitting

Remove and fit bath without damaging tiles ?

Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 3.30 PM

Hi there. Currently in rental property (off a friend) (she is selling next year and will have the whole bathroom replaced before listing so this is only a semi permanent solution) the bath is damaged and needs to be replaced. It’s tiled on 3 sides but 1 side has maybe a 20mm gap from tile (with small bit of trim covering the gap) (the tiles are old and there are no spares so don’t want to remove/replace if can possibly help it) the gap is 167cm only around 165cm of bath is visible so assume around 5cm is buried into the wall tap end and about 2cm on length side is under tile. I was thinking about cutting the bath into 3 sections. Carefully pulling it out. Maybe putting a 1650mm bath in and a slightly larger trim bit at the end that already has the trim. Does anyone think this will work ?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there Cutting the bath in small sections and carefully remove it should work. I would suggest to cut and clear the silicone around the bath where it meets with the tiles before you start cutting it In case it pulls any tiles off the wall during the process

I recommend to cut the silicon apart from the bath and the tiles and to try slide it out, also I’d recommend to lower the supporting legs if the are there. If it’s on some sort of wood, break that off better than the bath to avoid as much as possible from breaking tiles. Thanks

Fit the bath then tile around it. When you tile around it get some of that bath and tile surround from the DIY mercants. This is placed upon the bath and the other leaf is tiled over using the first course of tiles. Do this in addition to silicone sealing the space between the bath and the wall, and you should have a seal that prevents both bath and shower water getting behind the bath. With regard to your toilet and basin, whether you tile first then fit is up to you. Personally I fit then tile. With a decent tile cutter, cutting them is a doddle. Good luck!

Removing the bath as described should be okay as mentioned by AG. Although, refitting a bath like this, you really need to make sure it is sealed incredibly well. Might sound obvious but can be problematic.
