Plastering & Rendering

Plastering before repointing

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.48 PM

Hi, I am in the process of buying a Victorian (1880s) terrace house. The house has some damp mostly to the ground floor. My survey advised repointing the house with lime mortar but that this is not urgent. They also advised removing the plaster so the walls can dry out and then replastering with lime, I am likely to need to replaster anyway due to needing to rewire. Is there any point in replastering with lime before repointing with lime?

Fix the outside problem first as you’ll keep having problems inside the property.

Fix exterior pointing first. You may need to look at a possible sealer as well.

Yes by all means repoint the outside. Once plaster is dry I would take a meter high of plaster off the walls where the damp is coming through and re plaster the wall with sand and cement adding water proofer to stop water penetrating in the future

The repointing needs to be complete first then the plaster as the leaks need to be prevented then once you have repointed and removed all the plaster try to heat up the room with heaters to efficiently dry out the room also be sure to check your roofing for any damage
