Connecting mains lead pipe to copper
Anonymous user 16 March 2024 - 2.47 PM
I've had a leaky stopcock under my sink which is now beyond the pale!
I was about to just replace it but on further inspection the mains pipe coming in is lead (25mm diameter ish).
I see you can get compression couplers from lead to copper (3/4 inch to 22mm copper), is this still the correct way?
Since the current connection goes from 25mm lead pipe>stockcock>15mm copper, i will have to create a short link reducing the 22mm copper down to 15mm.
I've submitted an application to my water company, but no idea how long it takes to replace the lead pipe.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
You can do it with leadlocs, but you'll also find they come in different weights and can sometimes be a pain to get right.
Depending how much space you have, i'd be tempted to go for a plasson universal coupling then a use an internal reducer straight to 15mm, and your next stop valve.
To size the plasson universal coupling, its the external diameter of the pipe you're going on to.
Links are long but here:

Yes this is the correct way, I still often see these kind of jobs an awful lot with corroded pipes on an old stop tap.
You can buy a 25mm to 15mm stopcock to replace the stopcock if needed until water company get back to you about the lead pipe, but that should of been replaced by now
