Laying down slate chippings on top of existing gravel

Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 3.30 PM

I laid down membrane and gravel in my garden over 20 years ago. The membrane has since rotted and the weeds are rampaging! I want to put down some slate chippings to refresh the look but don’t have the finance or energy to dig up the entire back garden and remove the existing gravel. I am getting the weeds cleared. Can I lay membrane on existing gravel and then slate chippings on top? Do I even need the membrane?

Simple answer is yes you can especially if it has something edging the path...it's not ideal but definitely use the membrane or you soon have a mix of slate and gravel and weeds coming back through.... Use a proper driveway membrane not a cheap cloth one or it rots within 2-3 years. It will still be a quick fix but if that's all you can afford or achieve then it's ok
