Bricklaying & Repointing

Loose brick around window causing crack inside?

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.48 PM

I have a crack in plaster under window downstairs 2mm at widest, it's been there a while...I think I looks bigger, notice outside there is a small loose brick right next to corner of window sill and some cracking to the pointing. It's an old house over 100 years.

The pointing if it hasn't been re done its easily removed and then re pointed as it might be that water is getting in and the crack is what is the damage i would follow that route first

only way it can be related to the outside is if there is no cavity so its a solid wall, and the crack is directly behind the loose brick on the outside , if there is a cavity then it should not be related to to the loose brick on the outside skin , measuring from the outside brick to the inside wall alongside the window can defare the thickness of the wall which will tell you if there is a cavity or not . rebed the outside brick or rack out fully and point and pack tight, only take it out if you know theres a cavity , fill the crack internally with filler and check over time for movment .
