Which way do new floor joists go?

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.48 PM

Have a 6 x 7m loft space currently with 4” x 2” ceiling joists. Looking to install 6 x 2” floor joists 400mm (raised with packers) with 18mm osb board flooring on top. Excuse the silly question but which should the new flooring joists go? https://freeimage.host/i/UpnWqQ Orange or green? Chimney breast has been removed and is on the right of the picture (party wall) Thanks

Wall plate to wall plate following the same span as roof trusses so green line. If the wall plates have timber plate on the brick then you also want to pack any existing structural brickwork within that area to help support new timbers too. You can sandwich or add to the existing ceiling ties with the new 6x2 nailing them well together as long as you use c24 timber. The major thing is to make sure the timbers sit on all wall plates and are also supported under any other structural walls within the current area.

This sounds like no building regs or structural calcs have been approved , with a span of 6m most timbers are 5.1 - 6 allowing no bearing . The best way would be 3 x steels two at wall plates and a central steel , with 6 or 7 x2s fitting in the web of the steel to form new floor above existing ceilings . 18 or 22mm T & G flooring glued .
