Bathroom Fitting

Can I convert bedroom into bathroom

Anonymous user 28 February 2024 - 4.05 PM

I am looking to buy a house that has a downstairs bathroom. Would it be feasible to convert the room above this into a bathroom. I am assuming that we could install a new waste pipe and connect it, as the room below currently has a toilet. I am also assuming that the floor in the bedroom is strong enough to support a full bathtub. What else would I need to know to understand if this was possible?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. The main consideration will be regarding services. This is because you will need to extend the current hot & cold feed to the proposed room and also pipe out waste to the soil pipe/grey waste. However, as long as the soil pipe can be tied into within regs then it is a feasible proposition. You could of course upgrade your soil pipe as part of the works depending on your budget and the current plumbing's condition. This work would of course require the removal of the floorboards in the upstairs room which you could build on after the plumbing or replace with sheet material and a modern water impermeable solution if in a poor state of repair/upgrade the specification. If you have any further questions or require more specific information please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Short answer is yes. Depending on the nature of the existing dwelling, you might find it to be a fairly straightforward job or you might find the cost to be too prohibitive and thus not worth it. But most things that you can think of are doable, it’s always a matter of how much value you get out of it compared to how much you have to spend to achieve it🙏🙏

Just make sure the bathtub is positioned next to a load bearing wall. Check floor and direction of joists below and plan a route for new pipework. You'll be fine.
