Hairline crack - Cotswold stone house

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.47 PM

Hey all. I will preface this saying I know nothing about this, so please pardon my naivety. I put a bolt in to our Cotswold stone wall yesterday to attach a rope for a polyester sun screen thing (nothing heavy) good done shade for little one. I followed the instructions on drill bit size, installation, etc and now have a hairline crack in the stone. I’m unable to upload images (I’ve tried) but the crack comes out either side of the hole where the bolt is and runs to the top and bottom of the stone. It’s only noticeable up close. My question is, is this anything to worry about or is it likely to be purely aesthetic? Can I seal it with some EBT+ or do I need somebody to come and channel it out and repoint it? Naturally my concern is that this will be an issue in winter, so I want to get it sorted properly. It’s not near a window or door reveal, it’s the last brick of our house before the join to the neighbours. Thanks in advance

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The only problem you can get with that is water getting into the crack freezing with freeze thaw and making the crack bigger. Also when you fix into masonry whenever possible it is best to fix into the joints because any steel fixings will rust and expand and cause the stone to blow.

There's no reason to panic it's only hairline so not desparate to put any pointing mix in or open it up to do so ..simply keep a eye on it probably never have a issue with for year's to come hairline cracks appear in all structures
