Bricklaying & Repointing

Pillar strengthening

Anonymous user 16 March 2024 - 2.47 PM

I have a brick pillar which is free standing. I have tried to hang a steel gate on it but it's not strong enough. Would it strengthen it if I took capping stone off and filled center with rebar and concrete? Gate is very heavy Other idea I had was use 6x2 either side of pillar and fasten it on with m10 thread bar straight through then fill with concrete. Gate is 1.7m wide and weighs about 90kg pillar is 2x2 bricks wide

Good evening. Depending on the size and weight of the gate, the brick pillar may not be big enough. And if it is hollow at the moment definitely no strength. Normal bricks only 100mm wide. So gate fixing needs to go deeper. Ideally in to concrete.

No, if you was the fill the piers up with concrete it will strengthen the pier but not enough, the rebar or in some cases I've installed a steel bar which has a plate that you build the brickwork on to, which helps for proper strengthen

I dont hang on brickwork unless 18sq 25mm bar down into concrete /best to put in when concrete for pier is put in /also when gate is hung put a jockey wheel on far end of gate to assist with the weight of gate

I would suggest to demolish the brick pier. Excavate to provide suitable foundations (gen3) say 900x900x600 deep. Insert 24mm rebar into concrete pad this can be done whilst pouring concrete but may be easier to drill and resin fix once cured enough. Rebar should be 50mm away from inside brickwork pier. Build new square pier 675x675 and pour in gen3 concrete. Hang gate 28 Days later.
