How would an electrician install a new cable?

Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 3.29 PM

I'm considering replacing my gas hob with an induction hob. An electrician would need to run a higher rated cable from my fuseboard to the kitchen for the additional load, my question is how (physically) is this done? i.e. does it mean ripping floorboards up? Or is it possible to fish it through the existing cable runs? I live in a 3-bed terrace so not a massive house.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Having just completed a domestic I stalation course I would say this is the most challenging of jobs as he won’t know exactly where the existing cable runs or how it is secured or clipped into place. Most likely solution is to chase out where the existing cable runs down the wall to under the floor. If the old cable is loose under the floor back to the fuse board he may be able to pull through the new cable using the old one. This can be difficult with higher rated cable as it’s less flexible (most likely to be a 6mm cable). If he can’t pull through the old one he may snip it off under the floor and have to fish through a new one which may involve lifting carpet and floor boards. Either way good luck. But the higher rated cable is a must as the old gas would only of need to supply a small spark compared to the new one.

Why do you think you need to run a new cable? It would be most unusual if there wasn't a cooker circuit already installed. Do you have an accessory plate with a big red switch on it?

You need to check that you definitely don’t have a 30 amp supply in the kitchen already for the oven if it’s electric, one 30 amp supply may be enough to power your oven and hob, depending on the ratings etc,

Every job is differnt . They certainly wont be able to pull an new larger cable in and existing runs in wall , it’s also very unlikely that they will be able to pull a cable though under the floors on the old one , probably there isn’t even an old one as it was probably just a spur off of the ring main so would only go to a nearby socket . But every install is difdenrt , they may ne able to utilise kick plates under kitchen cupboards or run in existing boxings or something , but almost certainly carpets and boards will have to come up . If you have laminate floors then another route will need to be found
