Replacing existing outdoor light with solar light

Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 3.29 PM

Hi, We're looking to replace our existing outdoor light by our door with a solar light. I can put up the solar light easily no problem, I just obivously want it to replace the existing light which is linked up to the rest of the electrics and the switch is by the door. What's the best way to remove the existing light and leave it in a safe position? If I unwire the old light is there a safe way to leave those live wires as they are, with the solar light on top to cover them? Thanks

It would be simple to make safe for an electrician. It involves removing the connection to the switch and the light fitting.

Call a qualified electrician, its a quick job but needs to be done safely. Why change to solar, led outside lighting is very cheap to run & you have the power already there? Just a thought?

There are numerous ways to make the circuit safe, but you’d really need an electrician to carry out the work as there are also many ways to cause injury to someone or damage to your property from unsafe wiring. This should be a relatively cheap and easy job and it really wouldn’t be worth the risk to save a few pounds.

If you want to leave the old lighting cable in place then you need to terminate it into an IP65 weatherproof box. Although from a professional point of view I'd have to agree with others & advise on getting an electrician to do it, it's a small job so wouldn't cost much.
