Painting over stains

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.47 PM

Hi all, Last year we had our walls re plastered and painted, unfortunately we accidentally squirted pomegranate juice all over the wall. Is it possible to paint over these stains? After reading around it sounds like I might need a stain blocking primer, something like Zinsser BIN primer or an oil based primer? Would I be able to just paint over the stains or will this be obvious once dried? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Hi, If the wall and paint looks still fresh and u can manage to connect the same/similar paint u could possibly try to area/wall patch and probably do this 3-4 times - small sanding could also help (the best is to give a try with small patch first). If the stain is still visible u need to prime it first and u can do this with spray primer which is pretty cheap but u need to be aware that patch area which is done after time will be slightly different than different walls when u finish and most of the times u want to paint all wall if u desired the best finish. I hope it helps

Somebody stated to gloss over it then emulsion over gloss….please don’t do that. Zinsser BIN or Zinsser Coverstain straight over the stain, make sure to brush or roll it over smooth. After about an hour you can topcoat over it with the wall colour emulsion (hopefully you have some left over from when the walls were painted) , may take 2 coats but make sure first coat is thoroughly dry before a second coat should you need to.

Lightly rub down the stain then apply a waterbased bin sealer then apply your emulsion! Gloss is to shiny and will show after drying it’s also to heavy not to be seen
