Windows Question

How do we fix a window that has a gap on the hinge side at the bottom?

Hi everyone,

Our nursery window in our new home is (apparently) fairly new PVC window but there is a large gap on the hinge side when we close it between the window and the window frame which is letting a lot of wind through. It is fine at the top and closes tightly there but not at the bottom for some reason - it is not off to one side more away from the frame. How do we fix this? Is this something we can do ourselves (ideally) or if not what trade do we need to fix it. We are moving in next week and obviously this is urgent with it being the nursery window and it getting chilly at night.

Many Thanks,

Hi there

It would ideally help if you could have posted a picture of the hinge, from what we can read it sounds like the bottom hinge has not been set correctly into the window frame, this would be evident by the bottom side of the sash touching the window frame prior to the top side, if this is the case then the hinge screws could be removed and the hinge re-sited to its proper position, in most cases with these windows this is tight and hard against the frame, you may also try putting a small spirit level on the bottom of the window frame and checking it for level and then try to check for level on the sash, if the readings on the spirit level differ then the sash is not sited squarely
At all costs, if you are attempting to re-site the hinge, then ensure that the sash is supported properly before doing so, if you are in doubt contact a qualified tradesman in your area

Many Thanks
