Instant electric water heater, with HOT water feed

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.42 PM

HI, we have a large bungalow, the water is heated by an immersion heater ( generally powered from the solar panels) and it is located at the south end of the building. A hell of a lot of water is wasted, waiting for the hot water to arrive at the north end of the building. So I am thinking of installing an electric instant water heater to supply the north end of the house. My question is, if I fit a water heater and the north end of the building, in the hot pipe running from the immersion heater ( in the south of the building ), will it function ok ?. My logic is while the water coming from the immersion is cold ( IE just waiting for the hot to arrive ) then the new local instant heater would heat the water, but as the water from the immersion heater gets hotter, the new instant heater will do less and less and eventually will not do any heating, eventually the hot water ( from the immersion ) will simply pass straight through it. In simple terms what happens if an electric instant water heater is supplied with pre heated hot water. ? UPDATE.... First reply from a plumber said " Best way to do it is to cap off the hot water supply at that side of the house and connect cold water to the new water heater then connect to that hot water pipes to this side of house. " Yes of course that would work. BUT, I have a huge immersion tank heated for free from solar panels during the day, so I only want my night time use of hot water in that part of the building to be on night time ( grid ) electricity, while waiting for the hot water from the immersion to arrive. UPDATE 2..... A few plumbers have answered ( thank you ) and each one has suggested an alternative way, but no-one had actually answered my question, regarding would my suggested method work ? Thanks Thanks for any advice David

Another option is to add a secondary hot circulating pump to receive hot water much quicker to north side of building. This would require a new pipe line to be install to nearest draw off of hot outlets fro where cylinder is located at present to other side Vitor Silva

Most logical way would be to have a secondary return but it would depend on how easy it is to run the pipe work from the cylinder to the furthest hot tap

Best way is to put a hot water circulation system in, you would need a plumber but you will still be utilising the water heated by the solar panels
