Primer for DIY cement feather finish

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.47 PM

Can I get your advise on primers for indoor cement that is not being tiled over, it is a cement look. The first for a feature wall and second is for wood artwork. For the wall it is bonding DIY feather cement to an indoor wall as a feature wall and so that it doesn't crack over time. The wall will have natural movement in it plus the neighbours above like to run around. The link here shows the DIY cement wall but doesn't use a primer (https://youtu.be/_qzbGVzvS9Y). And secondly doing the same with thin layer of feather cement on large pieces of plain wood for artwork on the wall. Either with OSB or plywood. I am trying to go as cheap as possible. The options I have are; PVA - I read this reacts with water in cement and actually prevents bonding. But what if the PVA is dry before it goes on? SBR - I read this is good to bond cement to wood substrate, but don't know about a wall? Epoxy - too expensive and complicated as a novice and for big areas Tiling primer - Can I use a primer for tiling as that is safe and used for cement adhesives? Acrylic primer - is this the same as PVA or SRB and if not why is it better or worse as an option? Many thanks for your advise

Hi Martina, Apply two coats of water-based synthetic resin primer like Mapei with either brush or roller, make sure it's completely dry between the application. If the surface is prone to excessive lateral movement, you can also wrap it in alkaline resistance plastic rendering mesh. Both options very cheap and highly effective. Don't use PVA Good luck 👍 James
