Damp Proofing

Damp around switches

Anonymous user 16 March 2024 - 2.46 PM

We recently had some work done, part of which was new electrics. We now have damp patches around new sockets on the external wall. We asked the builder about it and he is abstaining from responsibility. I read that salt/damp proof plaster should be used on old walls. The damp exactly follows where they replastered. When I asked him about this he said 'well you didn't ask for damproofing'. Is it possible it's as simple as the plaster? Surely he should at least come back and look?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Most likely the new backboxes are collecting the water that already existed in the wall. In other word you had a preexisting damp issue

This condition is called hygroscopic dampness. It’s caused by a filler or plaster used to glue the electrics in, it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. It has to be removed and replaced with render , there is no other cure. It is totally caused by your contractor.

IT sounds as though there had been some damp proofing carried out before and your electrician has cut through existing render (or whatever system has been applied) and replaced it with a lightweight plaster. That will attract any salts. It's a plastering job for someone who knows what they are doing
