Floor joist strengthening - vibrating/bouncing floors when walking

Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 3.27 PM

Hi! Is it possible to strengthen floor joists and add additional wooden batons to strengthen my floors? When you walk in one of the bedrooms, all the furniture bounces. All the floors are accessible from underneath in my basement, except for 1 room that will need the old flooring lifted. What trade person do I look for to ask for quotes? Many thanks

Hi Brenda, Yes it's possible to strengthen flooring using Noggins (pieces of wood generally made of the same wood as the floor joists) these will strengthen the floor. If the floorboards themselves are bouncing then odds are the flooring will need to come up, the boards re played with glue (noggins could be done at this time too) and secured back down. For this job you'd be looking for a carpentry. Kind regards Kai Peterborough Carpentry

Hi It’s sounds to me like the joist are either under sized for the span of the room or it could be that you have an infestation of common furniture beetle ( wood worm ) or even dry rot . No floor should act like yours is doing so I would get a local timber treatment company out to give you a free survey and report .

Hi To offer additional advice, yes it is possible to add additional joists noggins to existing layout. You need to be mindful of the additional weight being placed on the existing structure & layout, and weather the new joists (if being used) may put additional pressure on any plastered ceilings, causing cracks to appear. Hope this helps!
