Split bathroom in two

Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 3.27 PM

We would like to put in a stud wall to split the bathroom in two to create an ensuite. No new windows need to be put in as there are currently two windows in the bathroom quite far apart so one would be in each bathroom anyway. A door will need to be knocked thru into the bedroom. We're not sure of the process? Do we need to hire an architect or structural engineer to submit an application before we hire a builder/bathroom fitter? Based in the West Midlands (Sandwell) Thanks Thank you for the answers! In response to the wall where the door would need cutting out between the bedroom and ensuite it is not a load bearing wall. But would building regs be needed to be notified of the new bathroom we are creating? And would it be the builder or myself that would contact building regs to get it all signed off? Thanks in advance

For the plumbing and drainage connections, a plumber should be able to comment. For knocking through the wall into the en-suite, a structural engineer needs to see if the wall is load bearing. The layout of the bathroom is a function of where you can practically place the items and also manoeuvre around efficiently. So a decent plumber or bathroom fitter should be able to help. To answer your added question, Building Control would be interested in changing the drainage in your house, but you can easily call your local council and speak to the Building Control team to make sure.

Not at all, A good builder will be able to establish if the wall where the new doorway is to be cut in is load bearing. He would prop accordingly and insert appropriate lintels. Then it's down to the plumber to re- configurate water feeds and waste water management.

Assuming it's not a listed building, the process is fairly simple. You shouldn't need planning permission and you can build a stud wall no problem, but you'll need to determine if the bedroom wall is load bearing to know how to proceed with installing a door. If it is you'll need to install a suitable sized lintel with cement, then cut the hole for the door. You may want to talk to a structural engineer to be sure, but you may be able to just do some online research and get the answers you need.
