New EV Charger Fitted...RCD(?) Buzzing When Charging

Anonymous user 1 March 2024 - 2.57 PM

Hi all, Today I had a new EV home charger installed but when I plug in the car to charge I am hearing a buzzing noise coming come a new bit of kit that was installed. The buzzing is coming from a new small metal box they fitted which I believe has a double pole RCD fitted (please correct me if I am wrong on that one). I am asking if this RCD should be buzzing when the car is charging or if something is wrong with the install? It's quiet until the car is plugged in and I hear no noises coming from any of the other electrical components or the EV charger itself. Many thanks!

First thing I would do is call the installer back asap so they can double check their work and verify if the is an issue with the unit or the installation. It’s uncommon to hear a buzzing sound but it is also possible on some electronic components when they are being used and drawing a load.

Buzzing normally means poor terminations that the cables have not been tightened enough and there is arcing happening. Best to un plug the car and call the installer back to check the terminations have been tightened. Loose connections cause heat heat causes fire .

Likely a loose connection, I recommend turning off and not using until checked

I am surprised that when the installer did all the testing on the charger after it was fitted he didn't realise he had left loose connections. Oh well.

Definitely worth getting checked by the installer. It may be a faulty component or loose termination.
