Groundwork & Foundations

Groundworker wants more money for materials than quoted.

Im looking for some advice. Back in Febuary last year we had some quotes to have our drive extended and covered with the resin bound gravel. We had a few quotes but went with the highest quote as we had seen good reviews for this company. Total works were quoted at £4800, he wanted £4600 deposit with the balance to be paid on completion. After delaying several times he finally started to dig the drive extension in march, we were left with a muddy hole until near the end of August when after several phone calls he came back to concrete the drive extension. It was then he told us he couldnt get a supply of the resin needed to start the resin boud covering. This week he finally contacted me to say the resin is back in stock but the price has increased and hes now asking for another £400. We feel if we dont agree to this increase we will have ended up paying £2600 for a small concrete drive extension and he wont complete the resin bound covering. At the same time why should we have to pay more than the agreed quotation, yes materials costs have risen but it his problem for not ordering them when we paid the deposit over a year ago. What I feel like doing is to agree to the price increase, let him complete the work then only pay the original agreed price. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Yes, some people look just to charge lots of money but the job yo don't do at the time. What I will suggest for you don't pay him nothing just when the job is done, I'm really sorry for you.

Hi I am a Groundworks company. I think this is his problem as he has left it too long. I personally wouldn’t start a job unless it can be finished within an acceptable amount of time.

what was the reason for not doing the job at the time, its not just material costs that are increasing, material are still in short supply with ridicules lead times from the manufacturers. so even if you pay for supplies now if it takes 12 month to receive them, they will still pass on any increase before they deliver.its actually very stressful at the moment for tradesmen trying to source materials at reasonable costs. or book jobs in advance hoping that any cost increase is not going to out strip any profit.

Sounds a bit dodgy, first of all deposit well exceeds the norm which is usually between 10% and 20% and unless he sent terms and conditions with his quote which stated any material cost increases would have to be borne by the customer then he needs to stick to his original quote. I would seek costs from other contractors to complete this work rather than proceed with this one and if you agree to his price then you really need to pay it.
