Ceiling Extractor fan in bathroom

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.45 PM

Is it a legal requirement that a bathroom ceiling extractor fan must be connected to the outside air flow via some form of vent or can the pipe sit in the attic space? Thanks!

Nothing ‘legal’ about it. It’s to do with common sense and knowing that if it’s vented into the loft, where does all the moisture go? I have seen some done like this and the loft has been absolutely dripping, in one case it was that bad the electrics were tripping because it had got into the loft light and various joint boxes in the loft. The answer is always vent it outside.

It comes under building regulations part F, ventilation! On a new build, or a job requiring building regulations approval, it wouldn't get signed off as compliant by the Council inspector!

Regulations state that if you haven't got a opening window in bathroom then it's best practice to get a ceiling or wall fan to vent to outside air
