Painting & Decorating

paint peeling off

Anonymous user 16 March 2024 - 2.45 PM

I’ve recently moved home and taken the wallpaper off in the living room and dining. The walls have been previously plastered and painted. However bits of the paint have come off while removing the wallpaper and the paint is loose in places there are patches of paint on the walls where the paint kind of look like alligator scales. I don’t know how to fix this problem. All I want to do is paint it but I don’t want to prime and paint to have all the previous paint peel off or for it to scale.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You will need to scrape off all loose bits, then use a solution called "peelstop" on the edges of the remaining bits of paint, fill and sand to smooth the patches then you are ready to paint. Make sure your first coat of paint is thinned out a bit with water so it can act as a primer as going with thick paint may occur the old paint to peel off again. First coat will need to be fully dried first before applying the second coat.

Step 1. Remove loose paint. Step 2. Purchase Peel Stop paint (Zinsser) it's a breathable sealer used where paint is peeling. Step 3. Fill and sand down any holes Step 4. Paint walls with watered down paint (20% water) when applying to newly plastered walls. Step 5. Allow 1st coat to dry (24 hours) apply further coats.

You will need to scrape the parts that are almost loose, fill and then sand with a soft sandpaper (180, 240...), where there are stains from the old wallpaper you can buy a spray stainblock apply on the stains wait until it dries and apply a new coat of paint over the stainblock spray.

You will need to scrape it from where it’s peeling and put some filler where needed. After you can paint it over.
