Insulating concrete garage
Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 3.26 PM
Hi,
I've got a very old concrete garage I'm trying to make the best of. I'm thinking of lining it out with 3x2 studwork spaced off the existing concrete wall, and fitting foam insulation panels between the studs, then plasterboarding on top.
What I'm not sure of is, do I need a plastic sheeting layer in there to prevent it getting damp inside, and if so where in that stack up (concrete wall -> air gap -> stud -> plasterboard)?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
Liam
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Hi Liam, I would definitely recommend covering all of the concrete walls in ‘black bitumen’ it comes in a paint form. This will create a damp barrier between the external walls and the new stud wall. Make sure aim to leave a 50mm cavity between the external wall and internal wall. When insulating the stud wall ensure the insulation doesn’t touch the external wall this is to prevent cold bridging.
Good luck,
Any issues don’t hesitate to get into contact,
Thank you

existing garage wall 50mm air gap . new stud wall infill with kingspan insulation then polythene vapiour barrier then foil backed plasterboard. finish with skim coat plaster
Good answer before, you should make the new internal stud wall and fix a breather membrane on the back of the studs all around the inside of the garage.
You should leave a 50mm air gap between the studwork and the concrete wall. The stud work should be sat on a sole plate with a DPC fixed to the bottom.
You will also need to lay out a damp proof membrane across the existing floor, lay insulation on top and screed/ floating floor.
