Do i need to replace roofing felt?
I'm in the middle of having UPVC soffits and fascias fitted and when the workmen had taken off the old wooden boards, I was told that the roofing felt underneath the tiles was not adequate and would need replacing with breathable membrane. I had only budgeted for the replacement fascias and soffits so have said no to this, but I'm wondering whether I should have gone ahead?
I would be grateful for any comments! Thanks.
the roofing felt is usually tacked onto the facia boad then drops into your gutter, if the facia boards have just been pulled of without first cutting the felt this will cause damage to the felt, on replacement of facia it is normal to install felt supprt trays which is replacement for the felt attached to the facia and into the guttering it is normally included in any quote by good tradesmen as this is a normal problem when replacing facia.
while it is not possible to say what condition your felt is in without looking at it, it is certain if no felt support trays have been fitted that your underfelt will stop short of your new facia and any water getting under your tiles onto the felt will drop into your new soffits.
if you are uncertain post the job on the site and get a local roofing expert to check your roofing felt
